Tree Care & Warranty

Planting correctly from the start is essential for long-term tree and shrub health. Follow these guidelines to ensure your plants thrive:

Planting Depth

  • Position the root or trunk flare at or slightly above ground level.

  • Avoid planting too deeply, as this can lead to long-term health problems.

Root Ball Preparation

  • Remove burlap from the top half of the root ball, and any twine or ties around the trunk.

Soil Backfill

  • Backfill with the soil removed from the planting hole. For heavy clay or rocky soil, mix in high-quality topsoil to improve drainage and root development.

  • Ensure the root ball rests on firm, undisturbed soil to prevent settling.

Mulching & Trunk Protection

  • Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the base of the tree, extending outward toward the drip line.

  • Keep mulch a few inches from the trunk and avoid mounding it against the trunk. Excess mulch can trap moisture, causing rot and disease.

Protect the Trunk

  • Guard against damage from weed trimmers, rabbits, or other animals. Injuries to the trunk can compromise long-term health.

Watering Guidelines

  • Water slowly over a longer period of time. Allow the hose to trickle at the base of the tree for approximately 20–30 minutes, depending on the size of the tree. This method allows water to properly soak into the soil and reach the root system. Applying water too quickly—such as spraying forcefully with a hose or pouring a bucket at the base—often causes runoff before the water can penetrate the soil and benefit the roots.

  • Watering frequency will depend on weather conditions, but generally trees should be watered every 2–3 days. Over watering can prevent the soil from drying out between waterings, leaving it consistently saturated and increasing the risk of root rot. Water more frequently during hot, dry conditions and less often during cooler weather or periods of adequate rainfall. To check soil moisture, gently move aside the mulch and feel the soil beneath. If the soil is still damp from the previous watering, allow it to dry out before watering again.

  • Newly planted trees and shrubs should be watered regularly until the ground freezes. During a wet spring, wait until the soil begins to dry before resuming watering. In hot, dry summers, trees and shrubs planted within the past one to two years may require additional watering, as their root systems may not yet be developed enough to access deeper groundwater.
